Red Rock Quilters Dec Chapter Report

As we approach the end of 2016, there is a lot of activity for us at RRQ. Our nominating committee spent the last month developing a slate of officers for our 2017 Board. We have an exciting group to vote on in December. We will share a photo of the new Board in January.

Many thanks to our retiring officers, Co-Presidents, Mike B and Cynthia S, Co-Program Chair Lynda S, Secretary Margaret G, and Treasurer Janet W. Each has contributed so much to our guild in the last year.

We are continuing work on our Quiltfest in 2017. Our Opportunity quilt has received rave reviews in the local Sedona and area exhibits. We will be bringing it to the AQG Fall, Quilt Show and Spring meetings, so you can all see it in person. A new venue we are using is the First Friday Gallery openings. It has proven to be a successful way to reach a new audience. You might consider using this venue in your guild.

The highlight of our November meeting was the trunk show by Jackie Kunkel, quilter, owner of Canton Village Quilt Works and author of Splash of Color. She shared many of her quilts that are in her book, including several “sister” quilts which are the same pattern done in different values of fabric and/or different settings. An example is shown in her Proud Mary quilts where one is more traditional and the other more modern with solid black and white.

The other example is a pattern called Twirling, which was named for the dancing done by her grandparents to the TV show, Lawrence Welk. Many of us are old enough to have seen the show ourselves!!!

Jackie also taught a class for our members, using the Judy Niemeyer technique of paper piecing. There is a photo of the class with their work and a glimpse of the energetic Jackie that made the class so much fun! Thanks to our Co-Program chair, Janice C and Jackie for making this a special experience for us all.
