February President’s Letter

Dear Members,

We have been busy putting the final touches on the events scheduled the next several months. February will bring the Spring Chapter Chair meeting, February 10th in Chandler. It’s our opportunity to meet with Chapter Chairs and other chapter officers to share what’s happening in the Guild.

March is our biggest event of the year: Quilt Arizona! at the Mesa Convention Center, March 22nd thru 24th. Our guest speakers will be Barbara Janson, Martha Walker of Wagons West Designs, and Carmen Geddes of Ten Sisters Handicraft. We hope you can volunteer, see all the beautiful quilts, and sit in with these great Guest Speakers!

Our last event of the year will be the Spring Regional Meeting in Lake Havasu, with our guest speaker Jackie Kunkel. Make plans to come and join us! Check the Chatter and our Website for details! We could not do all these events unless we have wonderful volunteers! I recently came across an article “5 Reasons Why You Should Volunteer” by Dawn C. Carr MGS, Ph.D.

  • Volunteers live longer and are healthier. Now who wouldn’t want that??
  • Establishes strong relationships. I found that after retiring, my work friends either were still working or had moved away, so I needed to make “new” friends. Now I have new friends who love to quilt!
  • Volunteering is good for your career. I’m not sure that this one applies to a lot of us who are retired, but it is true that if you volunteer while you’re working, you’re more likely to volunteer after retiring.
  • Volunteering is good for society. I truly believe this! Volunteers often fill the gap that businesses or our government doesn’t fill. We are NEEDED!
  • Volunteering gives you a sense of purpose. Not only does volunteering give me a sense of purpose, but I’m proud to be of service!

I also came across some other areas that were also important: sharing a skill, commitment to a cause/belief, gain leadership skills, satisfaction from accomplishment, keeping busy, recognition, to have an impact, learn something new, be challenged, make new friends, for fun, excuse to do what you love, feel good, be part of a team, and lastly, because you were asked.

So now, you all have been officially asked to volunteer! AQG is currently faced with the need for nominations for the board positions of President Elect and Secretary. In addition to the Executive Board we also need to fill the Directors positions: Membership, National Education, Traveling Teacher, Special Projects, Promotional Sales and Quilt Show Director. We all like having the quilt show, going to classes, the annual meetings, bus trips, and retreats. Start thinking how you can help next year; our current board is approaching the end of term and new board members are needed. If you know someone who would be great on the AQG Board, please fill out and send in the Nomination Form, sometimes they just need to be asked!
